Spiders in Maylands and how to treat them

March 02, 20254 min read

Hey there! Did you know that spider venom isn’t meant to harm humans at all? We simply have to intersect with these awesome creatures! Their venom has mostly developed for the stuff they can catch and devour once it’s dead, which, for the most part, is probably pretty small and not especially troublesome for big beasts like ourselves. Speaking of spiders: While some spider venoms can be toxic (and fatal).

Let’s take a look at some of the spiders that you could encounter when in Maylands:

Funnel Web And Ground Spider Pest Control Treatments:

Frequented bastardised Australia's deadliest spider. The funnel-web has large fangs that inject a powerful venom. They’re fond of hiding in moist locations and may be a little feisty when you get too close. On the larger end of the scale are the nastiest toads, which typically measure in the region of 1.5 to 3.5 cm long, have been known to cause severe reactions in pets, but no need to panic thanks to antivenom, no deaths from bites have been reported in recent years.

Redback Spider

Alpha-latrotoxin is a toxin found in the redback spider’s venom and can be serious without antivenom. The larger female redback is recognized by the long red stripe on its back and is about 1 cm in length, but, the smaller males are brown with white markings and are only about 3 to 4 mm long.

Mouse Spider

These spiders live in burrows close to rivers. Their venom resembles that of funnel-webs, but fortunately there have been no reported fatalities from their bites. Their abdomen are usually a solid black or dark blue, top with a light grey spot, and some even offer stunning bright red jaws and eyes.

Trapdoor Spider

The venom of the trapdoor spider isn’t dangerous and generally causes only mild symptoms in humans. They are often confused with funnel webs, but they’re not dangerous. Females are generally larger than males, with a size range that ranges from 1.5 to 3 cm long. They are named for the hidden burrows they create, with a trapdoor of soil and vegetation to snare unsuspecting prey.

White-Tail Spider

These small predators hunt at night for other spiders. Their venom is not dangerous to us, and they can be distinguished by the whitish tips of their abdomens. They can reach 18 mm in body size, and a leg span of 28 mm.

Huntsman Spider

Huntsman spiders can grow to have a leg span of over 15 cm, giving them an intimidating appearance, but they are actually shy and non-aggressive creatures. Plus, they make great helpers around the house because they love to snack on annoying bugs!

If you suspect you’ve been bitten by one of these spiders, don’t panic! Here’s how to tell what type of bite you have, and what to do next:
