How to Control Pests After a Flood in both residential & commercial properties

February 09, 20252 min read

We recognize that it can be difficult for households and businesses to recover from a flood. You are so focused on cleaning up the mess that you might overlook pests, but they can be an issue, too. Now, let’s pause and consider ways to ward off those pesky little critters while you are recovering.

Here is some friendly advice on pest control after a flood:

1. Inspect for Damage

After the waters have settled, take a moment to assess your home for possible damage. This will get you in a position to make sure that it’s safe to return and also see if there are areas in the house that need a little TLC.” Look out for cracks in walls or broken windows, these will provide entrance for pest when trying to make their home!

2. Secure Entrance Points

Be sure to don plywood or mesh screens over any entryways. While the surface could be drying, sewer lines may still be submerged and insects could be looking for a nice warm why in. To make it more difficult for them to come indoors, seal up these entry points.

3. Control Moisture

Pests thrive in hot, humid conditions, and flooding will provide exactly this! Keep your home dry, to help prevent any unwanted guests.” Circulating air with fans can do wonders, and a dehumidifier is a great investment if humidity is a problem. Be sure to clear out anything that can hold stagnated water (bottles, cans, pots, etc.); even the smallest amount is a place for mosquitoes to breed!

4. Remove Rubbish and Organic Matter

Pests are constantly on the hunt for food and harborages and waste can be food and shelter. For pest prevention, always seal trash bags and close cans tightly.

5. Handle Deceased Animals

We apologize to mention this, but it’s true that pets and other animals may not survive a flood. If you find any dead animals, put them in a plastic bag and seal it. Your pest control provider should also be notified, but the best course of action is to contact local animal care and control services to help.

6. Clean and Sanitize

When the cleanup starts, remember to declutter and clean your home. Additionally, extract water-logged items, and clean areas around furniture and hardware to rid the rest of the dirt and debris from the floodwaters.

7. Get Rid of the Pests

Once you’re settled in, you’ll be ready to call pest control and let them help you get rid of any unwanted guests.

We hope these tips help make your recovery a bit easier! Be well, and remember you aren’t going through this alone.
